Hi.
My name is William Quaedvlieg and I have recently started working on my PhD research into Mycosphaerella/Septoria genera at the group of Pedro Crous at the CBS in Utrecht (the Netherlands).
For my Septoria research I have been trying to isolate the Septoria Sp. type strain (Septoria cytisi) here in Holland, but have been unsuccessful so far.
I have contacted several mycological collections around the world but have so far been unsuccesful in locating this elusive plant pathogen that is more common in eastern europe on leguminosa species (e.g. Laburnum anagyroides).
As there are no living strains in collection and I cant seem to locate this elusive pathogen myself, I am currently posting my request for S.cytisi on fora all over the world.
If anybody has any Idea about locating S.cytisi, please let me know.
Greetings.
William.

Hi William,
there has not been answered yet our Plant Pathogenic Fungi - Specialists I want to have your first posting is not answered.
I know Septoria cytisi not, he should cause the leaves of Ilex whitish spots with a brown border. Because Ilex is rare to find me I am not going in your search for that Pathogenic Fungi likely be able to help. I wish you every success in your quest.
Greeting
Harry
Hallo William,

Re: Looking for plant pathogenic fungi Septoria CytisiHi.
Hi Harry.
The species that I am looking for (S.cytisi) has only been discribed on Leguminosae/Fabaceae. If I could get it from "Stechpalmen/Ilex", that would be great, but it has never been discribed as being isolated from "Ilex" so I honestly don't think I will be succesful while Pursuing your lead.
But thank you for your imput anyway, I appreciate it.

Hi William,
I also don´t know Septoria cytisi, but in Brandenburger see here:Brandenburger, Wolfgang: Parasitische Pilze an Gefäßpflanzen in Europa
Verlag: Gustav Fischer Verlag-Stuttgart-New York Erscheinungsdatum: 1985, 1248 Seiten
ISBN: 3-437-30433-X
there are two Septoria`s on Ilex-leafs-Septoria ilicifolia Cooke & Ellis and Septoria massalongiana Saccardo, but they are unknown to me.
I hope, that Professor Butin can help you, he is our specialist for phytoparasitic fungi.
Greetings
Detlef

Re: Looking for plant pathogenic fungi Septoria CytisiHi.
Hi William,
I have not looked at the article once and must say you're right. Ilex is not there as a host of S.cytisi but Laburnum - Goldregen. I had initially overlooked the sales of the two species separated.
Since Laburnum with us is quite often I will make myself specifically to the search, but it now makes more sense in incipient leaf fall?
Greeting
Harry
Hallo William,

Re: Looking for plant pathogenic fungi Septoria CytisiHi.
Hi Harry.
I am currently still trying to find S.cytisi, I should have at least another 2-3 weeks left before leaf fall will force me to suspend my search until next year.
I have been sampeling Laburnums from al over the Netherlands, A collegue even brought me some samples from France but all has been unsuccesfull so far.
All Literature describes strains that where isolated in eastern europe, so I think I will either have to go there myself or find a contact that would be willing to send me some Laburnum leaves from over here.
I am looking for leaf spots on Laburnum (Goldregen) but any black leaf spots on Leguminosae/Fabaceae could be it. Septoria Pycnidia leave clear little black spots on leaves (See image as an example)
I will be leaving on a hiking holliday in yellowstone national park and the Utah canyonlands in the USA in a few days time, but will continue collecting sampels over there. Chanches of finding S.cytisi over there are slim but maybe I get lucky...
I am always open to ideas and suggestions.
Thank you for your help .
